My pim.vol is very large, what can I do?

pim.vol is the database that your Windows Mobile device uses to store all Appointment, Contact, and Task data. By Windows Mobile design it must reside in main memory. There are no hacks or tricks available to move it to a storage card - even if there was, doing so would cause reliability issues on the device.

pim.vol is not installed by Pocket Informant.

Here are a few ways you can decrease the size of the pim.vol:
  • Sync less data. Notes take up a lot of space on Windows Mobile because everything is UNICODE or RTF. A one character RTF note takes up .5k. A couple pages of notes will take up 10-15k of  space. Imagine that taken up by all your contacts! Of course you cannot always keep your notes down. So the preferred way is to pick what you want to synchronize and keep them in the main PIM folders in Outlook and create new PIM folders to keep the data you don't sync.
  • Contact pictures take up a lot of space. If you have a lot of contacts, try not to put in contact pictures unless you really need it.
  • Delete Completed Tasks
  • Delete old appointments
  • Don't sync older journal entries
  • Delete older journal entries
The key here is to keep the amount of data on the device low in order to keep the pim.vol low.
