Pocket Informant uses the following areas to store information:
- Pocket Informant 8 only: All settings are now stored in the Registry.
- Pocket Informant 2007 and below: All settings are stored in the Settings.txt file. This is located in the "WebIS" home folder. For some people this folder is located by default in \My Documents\WebIS. For others (newer users or users who recently reinstalled on a new device) it is in \Application Support\Data. All settings are stored in this file.
- Custom Views/My Views: These are stored as files in the "WebIS" home folder as noted above.
- Category Icons: These are stored as files in the "WebIS" home folder as noted above.
- Individual PIM item icons: These are stored as files in the "WebIS" home folder as noted above. However the link from an icon to a PIM item is in the PIM databases.
- Category Schedules/Journal/Links/Task Project/Hierarchical: This is stored in the WebIS databases separate from the PIM databases.
How to Backup
Settings
Pocket Informant 8 users should first go to the Settings menu and choose "Export" and choose a place to save the resulting file. Then follow the rest of the instructions to backup the data.
Then all Pocket Informant users should backup the WebIS home folder located in \Application Data\WebIS or \My Documents\WebIS.
Databases - Windows Mobile 2003
If you are using Windows Mobile 2003 you will have to use a backup application to backup the databases as Windows Mobile 2003 hides databases from user view. Using a backup application will show the PIM databases and the WebIS databases that start with "PocketInformant" or "PI". One caveat under Windows Mobile 2003 is that because of how Windows Mobile 2003 restores database data, all links to and from a PIM item (links, journal, project, hierarchy) are lost because the IDs of each PIM item change on restore.
Databases - Windows Mobile 5/6
Under Windows Mobile 5 or 6 you can simply copy the \pim.vol and \pocketinformant.vol files which will backup all PIM data and Pocket Informant databases and also keep the IDs intact.
